Because of this fluid link, torque converter automatics are usually able to change gear smoothly. As a result, this type of gearbox can be a little heavier on fuel than others, and can also be slow to change gear. Choose if: you want a smooth, reliable automatic gearbox that keeps engine noise to a minimum.

When it decides the time is right, it disengages the clutch automatically, selects a new gear, and then re-engages the clutch.

As a result, this type of gearbox is usually either slow to change gear or jerky — or, in the worst cases, both. This means it can change gear more smoothly, and extremely quickly. However, it is possible to catch a dual-clutch gearbox out.

The other downside of dual-clutch automatics is their complexity; in recent years, older dual-clutch units have gained a reputation for poor reliability and some have needed costly repair work.

Choose if: you want the automatic gearbox that combines fast gear changes with good fuel economy. As you accelerate, the cones move toward and away from each other, adjusting the position of the belt and, in turn, the gearing.

The result is a very efficient gearbox, because the gearing can be adjusted almost infinitely. This means the engine can be kept at the optimum speed at all times.

Messages: 20 1 2 Next. A few years back, I asked my Citroen mechanic to change ATF on gearbox who insisted "sealed for life" meant he wasn't going to do it.

Car's done 65, and approaching 10 years. Yesterday as I was approaching destination, I had the dreaded slip on an incline and then jolt on take-up into first. The jolts were more prevalent than the slips. However, I managed to pick up trailer and get back to Brum no problem - although I did notice that 3rd to 4th required some intervention on the M6 with a manual push.

After that it seemed to operate as normal. Back in Brum and at low speeds, take-up into 1st seemed fine again - apart from the occasional jolt at lights and junctions etc. Intending another similar trip to Pembridge on Friday hoping to help a friend move house mile round trip and I don't really want to let her downbut am worried about how things might develop there. So I'm a bit fed up that the gearbox might fail after having gone to all this trouble fitting the towbar etc.

Any thoughts would very much be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ian. Last edited by frenchcarnut on Sat Aug 10, am, edited 1 time in total. Depending on which gearbox you have checking the level may not be easy, as the later gearboxes use a level plug system rather than a dipstick. I'm assuming that a 2 litre would be an AL4, do you know for sure which gearbox you have? It can be looked up on service.

Ben has a 4HP20 which is probably not the box you have, but I think Bandit has an AL4 which is most likely what you have. If you have or know someone nearby with a Lexia then it would also be worth getting the fault codes for the gearbox read - if the clutches have genuinely been slipping under load rather than just engaging slowly then there may be a fault code logged.

Main rail pressure on an AL4 can also be monitored in real time on the Lexia, this will give some clues as to whether there may be low rail pressure. Depending on what the problem is if you've caught it early enough a few oil changes may be all that's needed to see it right, and realistically oil changes are all that is economic to do on an automatic of this age anyway.

I don't want to get caught out miles from home so it looks as though my friend will have to forego help if I can't sort this beforehand. And to be honest, I have other work to do before then also.

Mandrake - how many litres of ATF will I require in total d'you think? Last edited by frenchcarnut on Thu Aug 22, pm, edited 1 time in total. A flush without is wasting time. Two litres of will sort you. Would be grateful if someone can tell me what's going on: Here, from a diagram at a Peugeot forum is an image showing the AL4 with a dual drainer and leveller plug I was expecting on mine : But if you look at my actual AL4, there is only a drain plug and no leveller and not where I'd expect to see them.

So, is this going to be a drain and refill only with a predetermined amount? Apologies if this has been discussed before, but couldn't find the thread. For "draining capacity" it says "approximately 3 litres". However I would caution that the 4HP20 training manual says that 3. Perhaps someone else has a later version of this document specific to the C5 that gives a more accurate figure.

I would also point out that there is an "oil wear counter" in the ECU that is supposed to be updated when you change the oil. If you don't update the counter you'll probably get away with it for now but at some point in the future it will start complaining about the condition of the oil even if it has been changed regularly. If I overfill or under fill, then I screw a perfectly sound gearbox.

Then I read about 30degree angles and so on. Thanks for the manual though Simon. I'll read to see if there's any point. We specialise in the supply of quality, guaranteed reconditioned Citroen gearboxes either from stock, in exchange for your existing Citroen gearbox, or we can take your gearbox, remanufacture it and return it to you. Ive been a C5 owner for about 8 years on and off and have never had any problems with the cars ive owned. I have just bought an 04 C5 2. Gearchange between 1st and 2nd is a bit dodgy at normal or harder acceleration.

citroen c5 automatic gearbox problems

It seems as if it slips slightly when engaging 2nd gear. It seems to be the same when either cold or hot. If pulling away slowly like your grandad drives it goes into 2nd gear without a problem. All other gearchanges are nice and smooth. The cars only done miles with FSH but there is no record of a change of oil in the gearbox.

Reading street grade 5 weekly tests

Could i be lucky with just a change of oil? Or is is it something more sinister? Many thanks in advance Jon. Re: C5 Auto gearbox Problem? It should most definitely not be slipping when engaging 2nd gear, and it could be an early warning sign of impending failure. There is no recommended service interval for oil changes for either gearbox, they are "sealed for life" according to Citroen, so you're unlikely to see any record of an oil change.

Unfortunately it seems that the "life" in sealed for life is about 10 years ormiles on these boxes, long enough for the manufacturer to get out of any liability. When you say you've only "just" bought it, do you mean literally in the last few days or weeks? And did it exhibit this symptom right from the beginning?

Dealer or private sale? If it was a dealer sale and it did it right from the get go I would seriously consider going back to them with the issue on the basis that it's not fit for sale, chances are left untreated the box will fail at some point in the near future if the clutches are slipping, especially if driven hard or used for towing which depending on how much the car is worth will probably write it off as its uneconomic to rebuild the gearbox or find a trustworthy replacement.

A 2nd hand box of similar mileage from a scrappy could be as bad or worse with no way to know until all the work of swapping it is done If it was a private sale or you find yourself stuck with the car and need to make the best of the situation then my suggestion would be to first find someone nearby with a Lexia one of the sticky threads has a list of forum members with Lexia's to get a diagnostic session run on the gearbox - if the clutches really are slipping there may be a fault code logged - although how much slip is required to log a fault I'm not sure, I've certainly seen a slipping clutches fault logged on an AL4 that I looked at that was loosing all drive after a while due to low oil pressure.

If you do see faults for a slipping clutch logged it might be useful evidence of a problem if you are going back to the seller. If it doesn't register any slipping clutch fault things might not be quite as bad, if its an AL4 the Lexia can also measure the "rail pressure" which is the main hydraulic pressure used to engage the clutches, there is a desired figure and an actual figure - they should track fairly close to each other.

This can be monitored in real time while someone drives the car to see if there is any obvious loss of pressure. The second thing I would do if trying to make the best of the situation you're in is to do one or more oil changes on the gearbox.

Depending on the cause of the problem you might find that 2 or 3 oil changes spaced over a few weeks fixes the problem, each oil change only drains about half the oil out which is why it can take multiple changes to get the oil clean if its really dirty.

I had to do this on my 4HP20 which was showing signs of impending failure, making nasty groaning noises etc, and had absolutely black oil in it. It took a total of 4 changes to get the oil back to a nearly clean state, the symptoms it had are now gone and it's running quite well, touch wood. There is no guarantee that oil changes will help, but its about the only thing you can do to an automatic gearbox short of a full rebuild, however autos are very sensitive to the cleanliness of the oil, it often does help and certainly did in my case so its worth a shot if you're keeping the car.

EAT6 and EAT8 Automatic Gearboxes

Fingers crossed its nothing too serious. I will try and find out as much as i can on tuesday when my local mechanic is back to work. Luckily i got the car for what i think was a decent price so am prepared to spend a little on it and i have a alfa diesel as back up.
